Estepona initially approves the municipal plan against climate change this Friday The Plenary Session of the Estepona City Council initially approves this Friday the Municipal Plan against Climate Change (PMCC), a document that establishes both the lines of work and the mitigation and adaptation actions that must be carried out over the coming years. as reported by the deputy mayor of the Economic and Innovation area, José María Ayala.

The mayor explains that the PMCC will comply with Law 8/2018 on measures against climate change and for the transition towards a new energy model in Andalusia and has stressed that the Government team has always shown its commitment to the conservation of the environment. and with the natural resources that must be preserved for future generations, so the document that will be approved will allow actions along these lines to continue to be implemented until 2030.

In this sense, the person responsible for the Economic and Innovation area recalled that in 2019 the City Council joined the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), subscribing to all the commitments that this entails and carrying out works such as the drafting of the Estepona Climate and Sustainable Energy Action Plan in November 2021.

Regarding the PMCC, José María Ayala has explained that it defines a series of actions that mark the path to be followed by the City Council in its environmental policy to combat climate change in the medium and long term. These measures are based on the results of a risk and vulnerability assessment study.

Once the document is definitively approved, the City Council must prepare and approve a report every two years on the degree of compliance with it. Likewise, the deputy mayor of the Treasury and Economy area has pointed out that the PMCC is not a definitive or unalterable text, but is subject to possible revisions based on the results observed and the experience acquired, with the firm objective of compliance. of the emissions and consumption reductions acquired.

On the other hand, José María Ayala has indicated that, among the measures that will be executed with the highest priority, those referring to the implementation of energy efficiency plans, the reduction of the municipal water footprint, the creation of a map of the of risk in the face of intense weather phenomena or the implementation of more green areas as carbon sinks.

The promotion of electric vehicles, the installation of photovoltaics, school training actions, improvements in the public transport system or promoting the recycling of materials, are other initiatives proposed in this municipal document of Estepona against climate change.

Finally, the mayor stated that climate change is an environmental process at a planetary level that can negatively and significantly alter the living conditions of all of humanity, which is why the different public administrations must make great efforts to confront it. this challenge.
